Tirra F1 — Natural
San Marcos de Tarrazú, Costa Rica — Natural Process
CoopeTarrazú has been farming the Los Santos Zone since 1960 — nearly 5,000 families working volcanic soil at elevation in one of the most respected coffee regions in Costa Rica. They don't cut corners. They don't chase trends. And on their own experimental farm, they've been quietly doing something most cooperatives don't attempt: breeding the next generation of coffee.
F1 refers to the first-generation offspring of two deliberately selected parent varieties bred to capture what neither parent alone reliably produces. In Costa Rica, this work has been developed through programs involving CATIE, CIRAD, and PROMECAFE, combining high-quality Arabica genetics with disease-resistant lines to produce varieties that are more resilient at the farm level and more expressive in the cup. The best F1 lots have competed at the highest levels of specialty coffee. This is that category.
What CoopeTarrazú's experimental farm produced this season is exactly what F1 development promises when it's done right. Naturally processed, light roasted, and unlike anything we've carried from Tarrazú before.
Strawberry and mango up front. A fruit sherbet quality that hits the palate with a sparkling effervescence on the finish. Brewed as a pour-over it opens into something layered and vivid that keeps changing as it cools: clean, bright, and completely unlike what most people expect when they hear Costa Rica.
We were glad to secure some of this. We're also being straightforward: this is a limited experimental lot from a farm that isn't producing at scale. There is no reorder this season. When it's gone, it's gone.
