With a producing farm of a little less than 4 acres, Jose Maria Velasquez is small scale. He and his wife María Concepción Ríos live with their five sons -- Rafael Antonio, Josafat, Yugdene Dayleni, Uri, and Josman Calec -- in a remote part of Jinotega.
A clear stream of fresh water runs from the mountains to the farm. The property is filled with flowering plants, and Jose Maria has reforested parts of their farm with hardwood trees including granadillo and mahogany.
They have a number of other crops on their farm to supplement their family's income and provide some shade for coffee plants. Bananas, oranges, lemons, and a number of different kinds of mangoes abound. They love showing visitors around.
We were able to have this coffee due to the efforts of our friends at Gold Mountain Coffee Growers. They are a social enterprise that, in addition to its own farm (Finca Idealista), works directly with coffee producers in Nicaragua, including Jose Maria and Maria Concepcion, to connect them with roasters abroad. GMCG is on the ground, all the time, teaming up with producers willing to take the steps necessary (and whose altitude and soil conditions allow them) to produce high-cupping specialty coffee. They literally stand on every partner farm during picking to ensure ripeness with refractometers and ripeness bracelets. GMCG also carries out sustainable development projects in communities, such as free computing classes for girls from coffee communities, medical assistance, microcredit, running water in schools, and educational supplies.
We couldn't be happier to be working with GMCG for the second year and look forward to an amazing future in coffee together.
